"There were no reports of any untoward incident from anywhere in the Valley although some stray stone pelting incidents took place at isolated places," it said adding "There was no curfew in most of the towns/areas of Valley although curfew remained in force in eight police stations of Srinagar and towns of Awantipora, Kulgam and Anantnag". Earlier on July 12, a police driver Afroz Ahmed was killed when an irate crowd pushed the vehicle he was driving into River Jhelum at Sangam outside Srinagar.

The authorities have also decided to beef up the presence of security forces further along all routes leading to Anantnag, 55-km from Srinagar, including the Srinagar-Khanabal stretch of the Srinagar-Jammu highway, sources said.

The separatists have extended their call for a shutdown — initially issued to mourn the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani earlier in July — till July 29, and reiterated their appeal to the public to march to Anantnag on Monday to participate in a "solidarity rally" planned at Lal Chowk. A similar march and rally have been planned by separatists for the neighbouring Kulgam town on July 27. If India wants an end to hatred and hostility in the region and lasting peace to prevail, it should accept the reality of the Kashmir dispute and address it in accordance with the aspirations and rights of its people.
